Verdict: **
What history has taught us about the films of Salman Khan, diehard fans of him will never stop to worship him even if he only twerks his bottom on the screen. That is what great about watching a Salman Khan flick in the theater. It may be multiplex or single screen, unending whistles, cheers and all other sorts of noises are accompanying you with meaningless dialogues, sloppy scripts, misplaced songs and numerous plot-holes.
Jai Ho is not an exception to that. Remade from Telugu Film ‘Stalin’ (which was inspired from ‘Pay it Forward’), Director Sohail Khan does not seem to have tried to better the original film. Story of the film starts from an action scene and ends with the same. Jai Agnihotri (Salman Khan) is a good hearted ex-army guy. He is always willing to help anyone in need. Meanwhile, he thinks of brilliant idea of forming a good deeds chain. A man helps three guys and tells them each to help three more.
If above story line would have continued, then it would have been an Alok Nath film. But to make it THE SALMAN KHAN EXTRAVAGANZA, story must have a villain, a comedian and hugely choreographed dance sequence. Here, Danny Denzongpa plays the baddy as Home Minister Dashrath Singh Patil. He and his family have done lot of bad things which are directly affecting Jai and his family. In turn, Jai beats the hell out of Dashrath’s thousand goons (they are literally in thousands) and kills his son in law. For revenge, Dashrath makes an evil plan to frame Jai for the murder of Chief Minister Ashok Pradhan (Mohnish Bahl). How Jai fights against the system is rest of the film.
Jai Ho has a very good one line story but while stretching it out for 140 minutes, writer lacks imagination. What could have been Salman’s first sensible movie in years remains to be just another brainless action flick. Director and script writer tried to make it entertaining but lost on various steps. There are infinite characters in the film. To list them, we have to make separate page. Notably, Tabu appears as Jai’s sister, Daisy Shah as Rinki i.e. Jai’s love interest, Ashmit Patel and Yash Tonk as Jai’s friends, Sharad Kapoor and Aditya Pancholi as bad cops and Pulkit Samrat as good cop.
Acting is not to be discussed in this film. Salman Khan fights, dances and does many other things. Daisy Shah does what she could do best-to look hot. Presence of rest of the characters does not affect to the film. They just come and go.Music is forgettable. Sajid-Wajid have failed miserably this time. Songs just lengthen the film by half an hour. This is not a boring film, but it is not entertaining at all. Few of the diehards will also be disappointed after watching Jai Ho. What you could expect more if a tank appears out of nowhere and starts killing!
