Verdict: *1/2
What is a gangster/mafia film? Viewers today have seen many of the Hollywood’s greatest Mob films (Godfather or Goodfellas). Hindi film industry has tried to experiment with the genre and has been successful quite few times, Satya, Company being the instance for it. Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai released in 2010 introduced 80s Masala in fresh package. It proved to be hit due to Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi’s excellent chemistry and some cheesy dialogues.
Like its predecessor, OUATIMD has many plot-holes and no brainer moments, but major flaw in the whole movie proves to be naïve actors. Starring Akshay Kumar as Shoaib Khan, we can easily expect that he will continue to be as menacing as Emraan’s character. But to our disappointment, Shoaib never turns out to be actual “DON”. He just remains a thug. Director Milan Luthria has completely failed to make Shoaib‘s character powerful.
Film opens where last movie ended. Shoaib Khan (Akshay Kumar) has taken control of whole Mumbai after demise of Sultan Mirza. He starts recruiting young kids. According to him, these young ones will prove to be the most loyal in future. Aslam (Imran Khan) is one of the recruit with his sidekick Dedh Tanag (Pitobash Tripathy). Story then shifts to 12 year later Dubai. Shoaib is biggest goon in India operating from Dubai. Few events occur and he has to return to Mumbai.
Story after this transforms into a love-story rather than being a cool gangster film. Jasmine (Sonakshi SInha) is a wannabe actress from Kashmir. She attracts both Shoaib and Aslam unknowingly. Rest of film is ups and downs in this love triangle with a completely disappointing climax.
This film is poorly written and executed. Lavish sets and camera work can not cover lack of script. Film is far too predictable. Nothing even remotely tries to make you cling to your seats. Rajat Arora should have emphasized on giving some more twists instead of placing unnecessary songs. After interval, films looks like scenes are taped together with no real sense. Music by Pritam is average. In the name of Background Score, audience is hammered with same drum beats again and again.
In acting department, all the leads fail. Akshay Kumar tries to give everything in his role but what is not written neatly can’t be executed beautifully. Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha don’t look convincing at all in their portrays. Sonali Bendre’s Cameo as Mumtaz is like a cool breeze in this film.
All together, this was another failed attempt of sequel in Hindi Film Industry. It is not that OUATIM (2010) was a great film but OUATIMD fails to generate charm of the first by thousand miles.
