Movie review: Timepass (TP Marathi Movie review)

Verdict: **1/2

A Romantic Comedy or Rom-Com is not new to the Marathi audience. ‘Duniyadari’ which is termed as the most successful film of Marathi Cinema attempted the same genre some time ago. As this flavored comedy seems to be the most earning and loved, we can expect few more of it.

Talking about Timepass (TP), the title is derived from the phrase which is used to denote the relationship which maintained for a short period of time. Film is set in late 1980s. It is the story of Dagadu Parab (Prathamesh Parab), a street-smart, rowdy, poor, good for nothing boy who is miserable at studies and Prajakta Lele (Ketaki Mategaonkar), a good-looking, traditional, nerdy girl or a MM (Marriage Material).
When Dagadu fails in his SSC exams, his father (Bhau Kadam) throws him out. To cope up with expenses, Dagadu star
ts working at a news paper vendor. At this tender age, a feeling of love arises in everybody’s mind and our protagonist is no exception for it. Prajakta, who studies in same college as that of Dagadu’s friends, is spotted by Dagadu. He quickly falls for her and there begins the journey of Dagadu’s adventures to seduce Prajakta. What started as a ‘fling of a short time’ becomes a whole-hearted affair for both. Prajakta’s father played by Vaibhav Mangale proves to be the barrier for their love life.
Movie has been added with various characters. There are Dagadu’s friends who are constantly encouraging him. Then there are Prajakta’s friends. Vallabh Lele (Bhushan Pradhan) is her brother.
Spruha (Urmila Kanetkar) is singing teacher of Prajakta.
There is so little to talk about the story because film includes very less events. Having runtime of roughly 140 minutes, director and co-screen writer Ravi Jadhav mainly relies on quick-witted one liner by Dagadu and his friends. First half of the film is spent on establishing the characters and next half tells the epilogue of it. Set aside the young age of both the characters, same story is being repeated for last 50 years in Indian Cinema. To get the gist, rich girl-poor boy falls in love and if their love becomes successful or not. This is the story of Timepass (TP). Towards the end, you start getting a feeling of Déjà-vu. Many plots are started and left alone. Like the subplot of love affair of Spruha and Vallabh is brought up and kept aside. There are a lot of things which are unanswered.
Though the film tells nothing new, it is thoroughly enjoyable, mainly due to crisp dialogues by Priyadarshan Jadhav and some very nicely written scenes. Like the scene where Dagadu and Prajakta are conversing through book titles in the library. Music is nice too. There are two love songs and a Koli Item number which is going to be heard everywhere in upcoming Wedding Season. Editing could have been much good. Second half is boring at a time. Film fails to deliver what is promised in first half.
All together, Timepass (TP) is nothing new but one time watch for sure. Film never gives any deep content. Some could view it as a sequel to ‘Shala’ instead I would like to call it as ‘Shala’ re-imagined with exclusion subtlety and warmness.
